Glos 116-3 f/o - need 229 to make Middlesex bat again

Miles Hammond survives for a third time.

This one is more clear cut, Naavya Sharma bends his back to bang in a bouncer which rises at Hammond who glances the ball into the hands of second slip off his shoulder.

The appeal obviously follows but nothing doing, just a sore one for Hammond in the morning.

He is on 16* from 69 balls with Ollie Price onto 11* from 34.

They still need 113 more to make Middlesex bat again, however.

Three overs left in the day as the hosts rattle through then with spinner Zafar Gohar bowling unchanged all evening.

Essex bowling attack is looking really impressive. Sam Cook and Simon Harmer have really impressed me so far. Great way to spend my day! Harmer once again proving that he is one of the most underrated players in div 1. Seriously impressive all-rounder

    Will, Essex

He's also the overwhelming early leader in our straw poll. Though it seems James Anderson has more pressing matters to worry about right now.

    Libby c Guest b Abbas 15 (Derbys 625-8 dec v Worcs 312 & 34-1)

Finally, Mohammad Abbas has his first Derbyshire wicket - and it's a classic Abbas dismissal.

Middle and off line, a little bit of nibble and Jake Libby edges to keeper Brooke Guest, who takes the catch moving to his right.

    Somerset 347 & 157-1 v Notts 338

James Rew and Tom Kohler-Cadmore have added 150 runs for this second wicket in 211 balls.

An edge to the ropes past diving slip Freddie McCann off Liam Patterson-White brings it up and takes TKC to 69* with Rew on 76* at the other end.

Anderson b Harrison 0 (Northants need 321 to win)

Northants openers are going to have a tricky four overs to face tonight after Calvin Harrison rattles one through the defences of Sir James.

It leaves a target of 321 for Northants to shoot at with a three sessions and small change in which to do it.

The damage was done by Tom Bailey and Ajeet Singh Dale, who finished unbeaten on 44 after Anderson departed for a duck.

Their 80-run eight wicket partnership has pushed the target for Northants from possible to unlikely.

RE:17:32 forgot the year 2226 but talking about old boys. Will the magic sunglasses and snood wearing spin king aka Simon Harmer get more or less wickets then good old Sir Jimmy this season? Who else will be up there for most wickets? And Essex look good for the win.

    Peter, Essex

Good question, Peter. Straw poll, people. Thumbs up for Harmer, thumbs down for Anderson - who gets more wickets this season?

    Ahmed st Simpson b Coles 34 (Leics 99-4 - target 481)

Rehan Ahmed is dismissedImage source, Shutterstock

Very hard to understand Rehan Ahmed's approach in the last few minutes.

He comes down the track again, but doesn't get anywhere near the pitch of the ball as he swings across the line, leaving John Simpson with an easy stumping.

"Horrible shot, I'm afraid," says BBC Radio Leicester's Richard Rae.

Rehan Ahmed thrashes the ball back down the pitch and although James Coles gets two hands to it, he can only deflect it, forcing the umpire to dive hurriedly out of the way.

It's been a class performance from this Sussex side- I've procrastinated a lot of work over the last three days watching it. At this rate, they could win the Championship even with the points deduction...

    Alex, Oxfordshire

They'll certainly not be on minus points after round one, despite the 12 point deduction for financial matters.

  10. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:01 BST 5 April

    Bailey b Harrison 35 (Northants 258 v Lancs 384 & 188-9)

Calvin Harrison breaks the partnership that could have won the game for Lancs with Tom Bailey failing to stop the ball running on to his stumps after a partial defence.

Bailey and Ajeet Singh Dale have added 80 for the ninth wicket to extend the lead from a gettable 234 to a possibly out of reach 314 and counting.

They have batted the best part of 37 overs which is a tremendous effort.

Jimmy Anderson comes to the crease with his reverse sweep in his quiver but it is with the ball that he could land this contest and a poke at the Northants openers tonight would not go amiss.

There are seven overs left in the day.

  11. Postpublished at 18:00 BST 5 April

    Somerset 347 & 146-1 v Notts 338

James Rew has used the sweep to good effect off spinner Liam Patterson-White but this time he's produced a sublime drive to the long-off boundary to move into the 70s.

  12. Postpublished at 18:00 BST 5 April

    Glamorgan 302 & 62-2 v Yorks 226

Full length from Dom Bess and Kiran Carlson utilises the reverse sweep to collect the second boundary of his innings.

Eddie Byrom is 29 not out at the other end.

  13. Postpublished at 17:58 BST 5 April

    Somerset 347 & 142-1 v Notts 338

Tom Kohler-Cadmore has 63* and James Rew 67*, surpassing his first innings score by three, and the Somerset lead passes 150.

Olly Stone did beat the edge of Rew's bat as he came forward in defence to begin his latest over, but chances have been in short supply on what looks an increasingly placid track.

  14. Postpublished at 17:57 BST 5 April

    Leics 90-4 - target 481

Rehan Ahmed pulls a short one from Jack Carson for four.

He uses his feet to turn the next delivery into a full toss but is slightly fortunate as it only just clears mid-off on the way to the boundary.

That's a better stroke as he drives all along the deck through extra cover for a third four in a row.

    Mayes b Harmer 4 (Hants 156 & 129-5 v Essex 461-7d)

A switch of ends for Simon Harmer has increased his threat which is saying something because he was doing alright before.

But that is a very good ball, ripping from well outside off stump and doing 18-year-old Ben Mayes all ends up.

  16. Postpublished at 17:51 BST 5 April

    Glamorgan 302 & 50-2 v Yorks 226

Kiran Carlson flicks Jack White wristily away down to third man for four as Glamorgan reach 50 in their second innings. They are 127 to the good and Dom Bess will continue from the other end.

Lots of light left in the day here - Warwickshire need to break through the top 5 before stumps for any chance of a win tomorrow.

    Tom, Edgbaston

It only takes an over to change a game, Tom, but I'm sure Bears would be very happy with that scenario. And it certainly looks like we'll be in for some late finishes around the country. The calm after Storm Dave.

    Leics 73-4 - target 481

Time for a change by Sussex as James Coles is summoned to have his first bowl of the game.

The left-arm spinner is fractionally short with his first delivery and Rehan Ahmed pulls it for four.

  19. Postpublished at 17:49 BST 5 April

Glos 101-3 f/o - need 229 to make Middlesex bat again

    Miles Hammond survives again, somehow.

He looks for all the world to have edged Zafar Gohar into the gloves of Joe Cracknell with a little prod of defence but the umpire doesn't see it and Hammond stands his ground.

Gohar's celebrations are cut short and there are stony faces all round in the lengthening shadows, they know how big that could have been.

100 up for Surreypublished at 17:47 BST 5 April

    Warwickshire 544 v Surrey 328 & 103-1

Surrey have had a few alarms during this long final session of the day but they're making steady progress in eating into Warwickshire's first innings lead.

The hundred came via a false shot as Jamie Smith got an inside edge away to the boundary off Barnard.

Smith is on 20 with Burns on 44.
