Tom Kohler-Cadmore produces a lovely swish through the covers off a wide one from Olly Stone for his fourth boundary, matching James Rew's tally and taking him to 28* - one more than his batting partner.

Glos 70-1 f/o - need 229 to make Middlesex bat again

Zafar Gohar picked up three scalps of his former team before lunch and is twirling away trying to force a breakthrough in this second innings.

Joe Phillips has moved to 37* with Ben Charlesworth on 24* and the duo have taken the deficit down to 159.

    Prest lbw b Harmer 55 (Hants 156 & 85-2 v Essex 461-7d)

Ooh that is close... but the finger goes up to end a good innings from Tom Prest.

Marginal call on where it pitched with Harmer coming around the wicket but it may have been umpire's call.

What is certain is that Essex needed that.

Prest was going quite well with 55 from 67 balls but he is out and Jake Lehmann is in.

  5. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 16:36 BST 5 April

    Warwickshire 544 v Surrey 328 & 34/0

The Edgbaston pitch is not one that looks like it's going to provide a flurry of chances for the bowling team so when they do come they really have to be held.

So it's frustrating for Chris Woakes that the normally reliable slipper Rob Yates has put down a knee-high opportunity to give Rory Burns a reprieve.

    It's a relief for Surrey who have to bat until well beyond tea tomorrow to secure the draw.;

    Northants 258 v Lancs 384 & 135-8

Ajeet Singh Dale is giving Lancashire's lead a hefty shove with 23 from 35 deliveries with the lead up to 261 with two wickets still to come.

Both he and Tom Bailey are capable of landing blows with the bat and it will be a nervous final session for Northants who could see their hopes fade quickly.

Harry Conway is still on and looking for a fifth wicket (he has 4-35 so far) with Calvin Harrison at the other end.

For such a prolific wicket-taker, it's something of a surprise that Mohammad Abbas hasn't picked one up yet for Derbyshire.

It's Ben Aitchison with the ball for this one, though, and Matthew Waite drives for four as Worcestershire claim a second batting point.

Seb Morgan takes the first over after tea from the Pavilion End at Lord's. How many teenagers get to say that?

Joe Phillips guides his second ball through the vacant third slip area for a boundary to reach 30* and take the partnership past 60.

    The deficit is 167.

Re. DRS (16:14). Considering around half of counties aren’t making profits without ECB parachute payments, DRS would certainly not be cost effective. And you’d need a third umpire.

  14. Sussex set huge targetpublished at 16:23 BST 5 April

    Leics 245 v Sussex 361 & 364

    Adrian Harms
    BBC Sussex

Much of the session has been spent pondering when Sussex might declare, but Ollie Robinson's decision may have been influenced by the fact that Leicestershire fell just 19 runs short of chasing 464 at Hove two years ago.

However, this pitch is still offering some assistance to the seamers and the Sussex attack will hope there will be enough time to secure a win and wipe out the 12 point deduction imposed by the ECB.

Jack Carson proved yet again that he is developing into a genuine all rounder scoring 85, whilst Tom Price looks an excellent acquisition scoring in total 116 runs on his Sussex debut.

There are still 38 overs to be bowled today, and with a good weather forecast tomorrow a positive result looks very likely

    James RewImage source, Shutterstock

James Rew runs one down to the rope at third to start the evening session with a boundary off Olly Stone's first delivery.

Add another four... Rew takes advantage of some width from Stone to slap through point for another boundary three balls later, though he plays and misses at the next delivery

Rew is on to 21* and the Somerset lead is 49.

  16. 'Early Essex damage should still prove decisive'published at 16:17 BST 5 April

    Hants 156 & 83-1 v Essex 461-7d

    Nick Gledhill
    BBC Essex

Finally a glimmer of light in this match for Hampshire. Not just because we have finally seen the sun but more through a fine unbeaten half century from Tom Prest, reached with a glorious straight drive off Shane Snater on the stroke of tea.

Prest averaged close to 50 in 2024 but that average was almost halved last season. Here he has played some glorious strokes at a good tempo that has allowed Nick Gubbins to slot into his familiar anchor role at the other end in an unbroken stand of 79.

Hampshire’s recovery began as the tail wagged in the first innings from 65-7, but the damage done by the Essex seamers to that point should still prove decisive.

The visitors will know it will be hard work with the older ball on a flat surface.

How expensive would it be to install DRS for each county ground? Feels like it may be a good investment, given the nature of Ollie Robinson's dismissal...

    Alex, Oxfordshire

Conservative (and unofficial, it must be stressed) estimates would suggest it would be well north of £50,000 per season, per club, for even the most basic set-up, Alex, so it might be a non-starter.

  18. Conway leads Northants fightbackpublished at 16:11 BST 5 April

    Northamptonshire 258 v Lancashire 384 & 113-8

    Andrew Radd
    BBC Radio Northampton

A session that had just about everything ended with the match intriguingly poised - Lancashire leading by 239 with two wickets standing.

Australian paceman Harry Conway almost had to have the ball prised out of his hand by skipper Luke Procter after claiming four wickets for seven runs in 25 deliveries - including three in four deliveries either side of lunch - to reduce the visitors to 40-5.

Leg-spinner Calvin Harrison accounted for Luke Wells and George Balderson, and Nathan McSweeney's fourth ball in Championship cricket sent back Tom Hartley shortly before tea.

Much could depend on how many runs Tom Bailey manages to eke out with tail-enders Ajeet Singh Dale and James Anderson in the final session. But for Northamptonshire - who looked in deep trouble after two days - a win is now a possibility.

  19. Tea at Southamptonpublished at 16:10 BST 5 April

    Hants 156 & 83-1 v Essex 461-7d

Not quite the follow-on Essex had hoped for with Tom Prest and Nick Gubbins taking the shine and hardness from the ball with some decent strokeplay.

Prest has reached his half century in the shadow of tea with a crisply timed straight drive and Gubbins, who looked out of touch in the first innings and early here, has also hit his straps.

The pair have added 79 for the second wicket and look comfortable.

It always looked as if reaching the old ball was the key to batting with Kyle Abbott and Eddie Jack showing the way late in the first innings.

For all that this has not gone Essex's way in the middle session, Sam Cook has plenty of runs to play with though. Essex are still 222 ahead with nine wickets to claim.

  20. Long evening session ahead in Cardiffpublished at 16:10 BST 5 April

    Glamorgan 302 v Yorkshire 226 - tea

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

Glamorgan’s gamble in picking two spinners and three seamers for the first match of the season paid off as 'leggie' Mason Crane took 5-55, a rare achievement for his breed in the first round.

Aussie seamer Ryan Hadley proved hostile in the afternoon with three wickets from shorter deliveries, including top scorer Matthew Revis, who reached 50 with a pulled six and was out next ball.

A lead of 76 could prove significant if Glamorgan make the most of what could be a long evening session, scheduled to last 45 overs if the light holds.
