Glos 80-2 f/o - need 229 to make Middlesex bat again

The visitors have battened down the hatches at HQ.

Ben Charlesworth has 24 from 116 deliveries, Miles Hammond two from 22 and the deficit is 149 with 18 overs remaining in the day, and Toby Roland-Jones back into the attack.

A big hour and a half or so for the bears here. Got to take our opportunities here.

  3. 50 runs

for James Rewpublished at 17:11 BST 5 April

    Somerset 347 & 98-1 v Notts 338

Brought up with a rather scuffed reverse sweep for four off Liam Patterson-White which skids between the keeper and first slip.

69 balls, six fours and a six and James Rew has begun the new season with a half-century in either innings.

A couple of balls later and he's dragged another shot into his own helmet and we'll have a brief break in play while he is checked over.

  4. Close!published at 17:10 BST 5 April

    Hants 156 & 108-3 v Essex 461-7d

Big, big shout by Simon Harmer and all the fielders for leg before against Nick Gubbins which is turned down.

He was deep in his crease and squared up and it hard to imagine that would not have hit the stumps.

Possibly a little high if you're being kind. Not a sentiment shared by Essex's close fielders judged by the prolonged appeal.

  5. wicket

WICKETpublished at 17:10 BST 5 April

    Holland c Clark b Carson 9 (Leics 34-2 - target 481)

    A freebie for Sussex.

Off-spinner Jack Carson floats one up outside off stump and Leicestershire skipper Ian Holland clips it to Tom Clark at mid-wicket.

A very loose shot, given the match situation.

  6. Postpublished at 17:09 BST 5 April

    Derbys 625-8 dec v Worcs 312 & 0-0

Teenager Dan Lategan finds himself at the crease for the second time today, having made 89 in Worcestershire's first innings. Wonder how often he's experienced that in his short career.

RE Peter 16:53: 6 in a group and a playoff would work so much better 13 games in total. But very good to see subs in the game long may it carry on. Somerset is next week so hopefully not a wet draw.

    Dave (not the Storm), Devon

The players were certainly keen on 13 games, the members less so. Is there a perfect solution which keeps everyone happy? And we believe you, Dave, weather formations typically can't type.

    Glamorgan 302 & 21-0 v Yorks 226

That's a poor delivery from George Hill, brought into the attack as Yorkshire's first change.

It's outside leg stump and Asa Tribe has no difficulty in finding the square leg boundary as he progresses to 14 not out.

  9. wicket

    Sibley lbw Thompson 27 (Warwickshire 544 v Surrey 328 & 57-1)

Dom Sibley survives a big lbw shout not offering a shot.

Any arguments are ended next ball when Jordan Thompson gets the lbw verdict to make the breakthrough for the Bears.

  11. 6 runs

for James Rewpublished at 17:02 BST 5 April

    Somerset 347 & 84-1 v Notts 338

A rather sleepy and sedate session sparks to life as James Rew gets down tow to smash Liam Patterson-White over the mid-wicket boundary for a maximum.

He gets a stroke of luck later in the over with another attempt towards the same area which flies off a top-edge but lands safely before creeping over the rope.

Rew is on to 42* and the Somerset lead is 93.

Intriguing session because you wonder what Somerset's goal is in this second innings? How much would they be willing to set Notts for a final day chase?

  12. Worcestershire all outpublished at 17:00 BST 5 April

    Derbys 625-8 dec v Worcs 312

Three wickets in the space of five balls for Anuj Dal, who ends Worcestershire's first innings by bowling Olly Hannon-Dalby through the gate for figures of 3-22.

A decent batting effort by the Pears but the follow-on is surely inevitable and they will bat again 313 in arrears.

  13. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:56 BST 5 April

Phillips b Morgan 45 (Glos 78-2 f/o - need 229 to make Middlesex bat again)

    There's the breakthrough.

18-year-old Seb Morgan has a bit of Toby Roland-Jones about him using this slope from the Pavilion End, you know...

He gets one to come back and across at Joe Phillips and beats him through the gate to thump middle and off.

Gloucestershire are two down and still 151 in arrears following-on.

Miles Hammond is back out there, having made 77 earlier today. Ben Charlesworth remains on 24*.

  14. wicket

    Lehmann c Pepper b Cook 9 (Hants 156 & 100-3 v Essex 461-7d)

    Sam CookImage source, Shutterstock

Jake Lehmann brings up the 100 for Hants with a clip off his legs which races to the fine leg boundary, but he has been undone going for the same shot and Sam Cook has another breakthrough.

That is the finest of feathers as Pepper did not have to dive to his right rather just tumble to the ball about two and a half yards away to take the catch.

Hants are still trailing by 205 and Essex are slowly edging their way towards the win.

  15. Postpublished at 16:55 BST 5 April

    Leics 26-1 - target 481

Back to back fours by Ian Holland as Ollie Robinson struggles to find a consistent line and length.

The first is clipped through square leg and when the bowler over-compensates, Holland is able to steer the next one through point off the back foot.

Jack Carson wins best fielding award for 2026 and we are only 3 days into the season! (See 16:29)

    Kevin Brighton

Great to see some common sense with the subs now in cricket. But its a shame there is no common sense with the fixtures. With Essex playing both Surrey and Somerset twice and Glamorgan once (last game of the season most likely a wet draw)

  17. News on Tom Lawespublished at 16:52 BST 5 April

    Warwickshire 544 v Surrey 328 & 44-0

The Surrey bowler appeared to be hit on the face by a return drive from Jordan Thompson during the Warwickshire innings.

Lawes seems to have got a hand to the ball which we won't put down as a dropped catch but it took some of the sting off the shot.

The news from the Surrey changing room is that Lawes has a split lip but appears to be otherwise fine. He will continue to be under observation.

  18. wicket

WICKETpublished at 16:49 BST 5 April

    Waite b Dal 17 (Derbys 625-8 dec v Worcs 310-9)

Always an under-rated performer, there are two wickets in the over for Anuj Dal.

Matthew Waite drags the ball into his stumps as he attempts a pretty undistinguished swipe - and goes down on one knee, wishing the ground would swallow him up.

Then Dal finds the edge of Adam Finch's bat and he is caught by Ben Aitchison - that may have flicked off the gloves of the keeper so it's a good piece of work by the slip fielder.

  19. Postpublished at 16:47 BST 5 April

Glos 78-1 f/o - need 229 to make Middlesex bat again

Zafar Gohar has a big shout for lbw against Ben Charlesworth as he gets one to slide past his defensive push at off stump.

It hits the batter high infront of middle and leg but the umpire is unmoved.

Closer than it looked at first glance, though.

  20. Postpublished at 16:45 BST 5 April

    Leics 16-1 - target 481

Jake Weatherald batted well in Leicestershire's first innings and that's a bold shot by Australia's Test opener, who takes a step down the track to Ollie Robinson and drives through the covers for four.
