    Gubbins c Thain b Critchley 48 (Hants 156 & 160-8 v Essex 461-7d)

That is the big wicket and one which could prompt an extra half hour tonight as Essex try to wrap this up in three days.

Nick Gubbins has batted pretty solidly and looked set for a half century albeit in a losing cause but he has dabbed that to short leg where substitute Noah Thain takes the catch.

Critchley now has 3-6 and four wickets in the match as well as his 173 in the Essex innings.

    Critchley for England?

    Richard, Essex

At this rate the ECB are going to need a fleet of double-decker buses to get all the players tipped for England this weekend to the opening Test against New Zealand on 4 June.

  3. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:41 BST 5 April

Pope lbw Bamber 16 (Surrey 149-3 still 67 behind)

Bamber produces a straight delivery to have Ollie Pope lbw.

Pope's reaction suggests he feels hard done by but he has to go and Surrey still have work to do with 12 overs left in the day, light permitting.

    Somerset 347 & 194-1 v Notts 338

The shadows from the stands have begun to stretch across the square and the umpires have just had a brief chat about the conditions, with seven overs remaining in the day, but we plough on for now, with Somerset now 203 to the good.

    Leics 118-5 - target 481

Can Sussex conjure another wicket in the four overs remaining at Grace Road?

Ben Cox flicks Tom Price down to fine leg for four before Ollie Robinson takes himself off at the other end and reverts to Jack Carson's off-spin.

Matt Critchley MOTM so far for me. 170 in the 1st innings and now bowling decent as well. Superb effort.

    Will, Essex

Not sure Simon Harmer can be classed as under-rated? He's been fantastic for years.

  7. Close of play at Wantage Roadpublished at 18:34 BST 5 April

    Northants 258 & 9-1 v Lancs 384 & 194

No further breakthroughs for Lancs as the players walk from the middle in bright sunshine and lengthening shadows.

The visitors look in command of the contest after an excellent performance with the ball, Jimmy Anderson finishing with 5-66 and Tom Bailey with 4-51 as Northants were stopped 126 short at the halfway stage.

Harry Conway's 4-38 gave Northants hope of pulling the game back into their orbit but an 80-run eighth wicket partnership between Bailey and Ajeet Singh Dale took it away again.

Four overs were there to be faced at the end of day and Ricardo Vasconcelos failed to get through one with Anderson bagging his wicket fourth ball.

Northants remain 312 behind with nine wickets remaining and need a heroic effort on day four.

    Somerset 347 & 190-1 v Notts 338

Absolute no jeopardy in this game whatsoever in the lengthening shadows.

Into the final 10 overs of the day, the intensity has ebbed out of Notts in the field as the Somerset lead nears 200 with nine wickets standing.

James Rew is on to 92* with Tom Kohler-Cadmore six behind him and both with have an eye on a significant milestone before they hit their pillows tonight.

  9. wicket

    Yusuf lbw b Critchley 2 (Hants 156 & 155-7 v Essex 461-7d)

Matt Critchley has a second of the innings and 2-2 as Codi Yusuf plays around a straight delivery.

    Derbys 625-8 dec v Worcs 312 & 50-1

Too much width by Martin Andersson and Dan Lategan gives it a hearty thump to the point boundary as Worcestershire reach 50 in their second innings for the loss of Jake Libby.

Lategan again showing commendable maturity - he has 30 not out to go with his 89 earlier in the day.

Essex have been very lucky with Harmer reminds me a lot of Stuart Law both amazing players and for whatever reasons neither got in their national teams. Which is great for Essex. And Essex to win the championships, this year got a solid squad. You heard it here 1st

    John, Chelmsford

The fact Harmer has just 14 Test caps for South Africa is always a surprise...

Cannot be long before Rew gets the call another brilliant Somerset wicket keeper/Batsmen, we keep churning them out.

    Philip, Lincoln

If only there was another one waiting in the wings to replace him if that happened, Philip. What's that? There's ANOTHER ONE? Yep, 18-year-old Thomas Rew who has already starred for England under-19s.

  12. Fireworks at Edgbastonpublished at 18:26 BST 5 April

    Warwickshire 544 v Surrey 328 & 129-2

Was Rory Burns put off by fireworks? While he was being dismissed for 55 a flurry of loud bangs and flashing lights were set off from behind the Hollies stand.

Had Burns got a faint nick on the delivery from Chris Woakes he might have got away with it as the umpire would have struggled to hear anything.

    Dawson b Critchley 14 (Hants 156 & 149-6 v Essex 461-7d)

    Matt CritchleyImage source, Shutterstock

There is no keeping Matt Critchley out of this match and, after finishing the Hants innings in the first dig, he has now returned to remove Liam Dawson at a crucial stage in the second.

It is a bit of an ugly shot as Dawson tries to chop the ball away through point or thereabouts. His bat is angled at 45 degrees and he clips the underside and chops on to his stumps.

Six down now and still 156 behind.

  14. Stumps at Lord'spublished at 18:25 BST 5 April

Glos 120-3 f/o - need 229 to make Middlesex bat again

Middlesex's day, quite emphatically, though Gloucestershire have shown some late fight.

After posting a whopping 445-9 dec, the hosts managed to bundle the visitors out for 216 with Toby Roland-Jones Rolan back the years to take 5-37 from 22 overs and Miles Hammond (77) the only man past 30 for Gloucestershire.

The follow-on was enforced and despite some gritty resistance in 56 overs of their second innings, the hosts have picked up three wickets - two for Seb Morgan and another for TRJ - and will go into the final day needing to find seven more with a lead of 109 still to work with.

  15. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:25 BST 5 April

    Byrom c Revis b van Beek 40 (Glamorgan 302 & 77-3 v Yorks 226)

Eddie Byrom falls into the Yorkshire leg trap.

He tries to pull a short one from Logan van Beek, gets a steepling top edge and Matthew Revis again shows what a capable fielder he is in the deep, taking the catch at long leg.

  16. Postpublished at 18:23 BST 5 April

    Leics 108-5 - target 481

With only eight overs remaining, Sussex skipper Ollie Robinson decides it is time to look again to his seamers.

Tom Price sends down a tidy over, costing him just a couple of runs, and now it will be Robinson himself.

  17. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:22 BST 5 April

    Burns c & b Woakes 55 (Warwickshire 544 v Surrey 329 & 128-2)

Surrey's second wicket pair were looking comfortable until Woakes took a sensational caught and bowled to dismiss Burns for 55.

It's ended a second wicket stand of 71 with Jamie Smith and leaves Surrey still 88 behind.

  18. Postpublished at 18:20 BST 5 April

    Glamorgan 302 & 72-2 v Yorks 226

It's not been a free-scoring pitch over the first three days but Glamorgan are going to have to find a way to lift the run rate if they have ambitions to win this game on the final day.

Another over ticks by, there are 16 to go and the lead is 149. Eddie Byrom is 39 not out and Kiran Carlson has 13.

  19. wicket

WICKETpublished at 18:19 BST 5 April

    Vasconcelos c Hurst b Anderson 4 (Northants 258 & 4-1 Target: 321)

Ricardo Vasconcelos tips the first ball around his legs for four but Jimmy Anderson gets his man fourth ball to give Lancs the perfect start.

That had a feel of a set up for the opener with the first three balls drifting to leg and the fourth down the fourth stump line, leaving the left hander and flying to Matty Hurst.

Harry Conway enters the fray as nightwatchman.
