• The water company has repeatedly revised its predictions for when the problem will be resolved, initially saying supplies would return by Sunday morning but now estimating they will be back at 18:00 GMT on Tuesday
• South East Water apologised to customers and said it had brought 10,000 properties back into supply overnight

South East Water has blamed a "bad chemical batch" at its Pembury water treatment works as the reason behind the water supply disruption for thousands of homes in Tunbridge Wells.

The Pembury site has previously been problematic for South East Water.

A notice from the Drinking Water Inspectorate last autumn said that there is or has been "a significant risk of supplying water from Pembury water treatment works that could constitute a potential danger to human health or could be unwholesome".

The inspectorate added a list of requirements for the site including completing an assessment of pesticides entering the reservoir and desludging the sludge lagoons.

In the past pesticides from neighbouring fields have been found to affect the water supply at the site.

South East Water says it is continuing to investigate exactly what caused water quality to drop at the site.

Bottled water stations in Tunbridge Wells have reopened at three locations - Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre on St John's Rd, Odeon Cinema on Knights Way and RCP Parking on Major York's Road. .

Cars were queuing up on Tuesday morning outside Tunbridge Wells Sports Centre for bottled water.

The company has once again revised its timetable for resolving the water supply problems - it is now estimating supplies will return at 18:00 GMT, having earlier said supplies would have been restored by 06:00 on Tuesday.

Thousands of households in Kent and East Sussex are without water for a fourth day due to an issue at a treatment works.

South East Water (SEW) apologised after up to 24,000 customers in Tunbridge Wells, Pembury, Frant and Eridge experienced a loss of water or low pressure since Saturday.

Some schools have closed for a second day, and residents are being forced to rely on neighbours to help bring them supplies.

At 08:00, SEW said it was making "good progress" restoring water but that 14,000 customers were still without supplies. It later said the issue would be resolved at 18:00.

At 14:00 on Monday the company said supplies would be restored by 08:00 on Tuesday, but many woke up to another day without water.
