Phil 어디에 있었어요? 저희 한 시간전에 시작 했었어야했는데 말이에요.

Phil
Erm, I got a bit lost – I was trying to find Buckingham Palace and I couldn’t…. I did get plenty of things for us to talk about today though…

Kee
무슨 말이에요?

Phil
Well, I asked lots of people for directions – to find out what people really say. I just asked the question ‘How can I get to Buckingham Palace?’

Voice 1: You could probably go down Regent’s Street, walk down towards Piccadilly circus, to Piccadilly.

Voice 2: So you want to come up here, turn left. Go to Regent’s street. Take Regent all the way down you’ll get some beautiful shops.

Did you manage to catch those directions Kee?

네 다 들을 것 같아요. 지금 길을 알려주는 표현 중에 중요한 동사를 몇가지 들었죠 ‘go’ ‘walk’ ‘come’ ‘turn’ 그리고 ’take’ 였습니다.

Phil
So when do we use turn and take?

Kee
네, 방향을 알려주는 말과 ‘turn’ 돌다라는 단어를 같이 써서, turn left 왼쪽으로 돌다 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다. 그리고 ‘take’는 보통 여러 길이 있는 경우에 어떤 길을 선택하라는 상황에서 쓸 수 있는데요, 예를 들어 take a left 라고 하면 좌회전을 하세요 이렇게 말할 수 있겠습니다.

Ok, let’s listen to a few more directions:

Voice 1: Yes, you basically go South here, walk down Bond Street through St James’, through to Kensington Palace, turn right, Buckingham Palace.

Voice 2: You’d walk to Green Park and then go across the grass.

Phil
So Kee, do you think you could follow those?

Kee
네 그런 것 같아요. 자 여기에서는 전치사를 살펴볼게요. ‘Across’ ‘가로질러’라는 전치사를 ‘go’ ‘가다’와 함께 써서 go across 가로질러서 가라 라고 말했네요. 그리고 앞서 배운 turn 과 right를 사용해서 오른쪽으로 돌아라 라고 말했습니다.

And what prepositions can we use with walk?

Kee
‘Walk’라는 동사와 ‘to’ ‘어디 쪽으로’ 그리고 ‘down’ ‘밑으로’, 이런 전치사와 함께 쓸 수 있겠죠. 그래서 ‘walk to’ 라고하면 어떤 목적지까지 가라, 그리고 ‘walk down’은 그 길로 쭉 가라고 말할 때 사용합니다.

Ok… all of those directions were for walking, which is great, but sometimes I don’t want to walk… Let’s listen now to how people give directions using public transport.

Voice 1: If I was going by tube I’d go on the Victoria line from Oxford Circus to Green Park and then get out and walk.

Voice 2: I think I would get the tube down to Green Park, then I would walk out there through the park and it would be there.

Voice 3: To Piccadilly and then jump on the bus, going West.

Voice 4: Jump in a cab.

Bus, tube or taxi… all different ways to get there.

네 그렇죠. ‘get’ 또는 ‘go on’을 사용해서 지하철을 탄다는 말을 할 수 있어요.

Phil
So what about buses and cabs – I heard people using the verb ‘jump’

Kee
네 이렇게 jump를 사용해서 무언가에 탄다는 말을 할 수 있는데요, 예를 들어 택시를 올라탄다고 할 때는 ‘jump in’, 버스를 올라탄다고 할 때에는 ‘jump on’을 썼었죠. 마찬가지로 택시에 탄다고 할 때는 ‘get in’ 버스나 기차는 ‘get on’ 이렇게 사용합니다.

Well, it’d be nice to jump in a cab to go home… but it’s cheaper if I jump on a bus, slower too – so I need to walk down to the stop very soon.

네 이제 여기에서 마무리하는게 좋겠네요. 오늘은 걸어갈 때에나 대중교통을 사용할 때 방향을 알려주는 다양한 표현을 배워보았습니다.
