Swapping the BBC Breakfast sofa for Strictly sequins, it's Naga Munchetty!

BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty is the ninth celebrity confirmed to be taking part in Strictly 2016. The big reveal happened live on the famous BBC Breakfast sofa this morning.

Following an impressive career in journalism at some of the world’s leading news organisations, Naga joined the BBC in 2008 as the presenter of Working Lunch and was a regular on BBC News. She became the newest full-time member of the BBC Breakfast team in 2014.

When talking about Strictly, Naga has only one word: “I’ve always enjoyed watching Strictly. It’s a brilliant show and it’s lots of fun. Fun is the word I would use to describe it!”

A self-described “Motown and Disco” dancer, Naga’s dance experience comprises two lessons in the run up to her wedding 12 years ago: “We decided we would learn a proper dance. It didn’t go well… I actually fell over in a big puff of wedding dress!”

While Naga’s dance history is limited, she is physically active and plays golf up to five times a week… perhaps she’ll be able to translate that golf swing into some swing on the dance floor!

Following in the footsteps of a string of BBC Breakfast presenters, Naga enthused about the past performance of her colleagues: “I’ve known Chris Hollins and will never forget his wonderful Charleston. There’s Susanna obviously – she was amazing. I loved her dramatic dances. Then there’s Carol. She completely embraced it.”

It was, however, one contestant in particular who inspired Naga to don her dancing shoes. She explained: “Anita was my inspiration for doing this – Strictly was completely out of her comfort zone and she really went for it. She gave it her all.”

And it seems Naga is ready to channel Anita’s determination and get stuck in: “The only way I think I can really embarrass myself is not giving 100%. If you’re going to do something – always be the best at it. Always do your best.”
