The "REAL Jenny" returned in spectacular style with not one but two outbursts that won her a huge amount of respect.

David’s fighting spirit saw him praised and criticised in equal measure, while got a mixture of sympathy, and some accusations of being "insensitive", after her chat with Christine. As for Ian, there was a warm welcome back – but with certain conditions.

And finally, what about Susan and her newfound love of Charlie? Is it just an opportunity for her to climb "up the ladder"?

Here’s my pick of listener discussions between 3 and 9 July 2014.

A collective cry of "Go Jenny!" could be heard across the land as “self absorbed” Mrs Aldridge "roared" – first at the builders and then at Charlie.

Welcome back the REAL Jenny! (Pam Easto on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Go Jennifer - two hits in one show! (Jackyt on The Archers blog)

Jenny is far from my favourite character, but nuff respect for her standing up to Charlie Fancypants & opposing THE ROAD. #TheArchers (@Evidently_Z on Twitter)

Good lord! The prim that roared! Finally #jennydahling does something worthwhile and interesting in @BBCTheArchers (@kathycaton on Twitter)

Way to go Jennifer! It's about time! She's been such a ghastly, self absorbed, vulgar nouveau riche figure for the last 2 years...it's about time she did something unselfish for a change and stood up for some principles... (Corin Warden on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

I haven't enjoyed an episode so much since I can't remember when! That was TA at its best and how the characters should be! (Caroline Andrews on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

If you're wondering what that loud bang was just now, Ambridge has just exploded. #TheArchers (@dixewills on Twitter)

David’s tirade proved rousing too, though not everyone agreed with his point of view, even if they thought the controversy about the Justin Elliott effigy was overblown.

Oooooh Deeveed I love it when you come over all caveman #thearchers (@AmandaWhiteArt on Twitter)

Why is David being such a wimp. So what if they burnt an effigy?!  #thearchers (@jackieschneider on Twitter)

Why the hoo haa about the effigy? Sussex villages burn effigies every year, sometimes funny but often political. Battle burnt an effigy of an unwanted housing development a few years back... (Vicky Payne on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Just finish listening to the podcast of 7/4 episode and all I can say is bravo to David & Jennifer, Charlie is trying to bully them and they're not standing for it.. I love the Wicker Man allegory. (Rosanna on The Archers blog)

@BBCTheArchers God what melodramatic twaddle from David. I have no sympathy. Just take the compensation and move on, I say. (@JanSparrowFed on Twitter)

#thearchers You teller of porkies, David. You have not a shred of concern for anyone outside of Brookfield. You are pro routes A or C. (@DanzacRose on Twitter)

As Christine and Peggy chatted over board games, some listeners reacted with sympathy while others were more pragmatic. And what about Hazel and that headstone?

I thought Peggy's monologue was beautifully and sensitively both written and delivered. (Keera Highes on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Also thought the exchange between Peggy & Christine was poignant - Chris doing what lots of us would do, jollying someone who seems a bit down along; Peggy's sense of loss of purpose so utterly heartfelt... (Jenny Tunley Price on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Oh Peggy. So sad. Tearful. @BBCTheArchers (@japster2008 on Twitter)

I'll miss you Peggy. I'll miss you terribly. #thearchers (@CelloSuze on Twitter)

You build your family, Peggy, then you let them go, gracefully, and build their own lives. That's what it's all about. #thearchers (@sundayhandbag on Twitter)

Just thought: blurry insensitive of Peggy to moan to Chris who never sees her son, is widowed and hasn't had the happiest life #thearchers (@MuffetRBoyle on Twitter)

Yes, it was very much 'OH WOE IS ME', there are some pensioners who never see anyone except a cashier in the post office, who cannot heat or eat, so get a grip Peggy, go and see the doctor and get help. (Leslie Mills on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Poor Peggoy having Hazel's poem to look at every time she visit's Jekk's grave. (Sarah Horrocks on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

The last thing we need to see now is Peggy being taken advantage of. It may take more than scones, but I say NO to Headstone B! (Crispin John on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Listeners were delighted to have "lovely Ian" back, but his scene with "whiny" Adam resulted in some issuing a stern warning to the scriptwriters.

Yes Ian the chef is back on @BBCTheArchers! Podcasting Sundays show :-D (@TheYarnold on Twitter)

Oh, it's lovely Ian! One of my fave characters. #thearchers (@archerslistener on Twitter)

Why on earth does Ian put up with him? Just a couple of minutes of Adam's whiny voice and negative attitude and I can feel the will to live slipping away. (Sarah Mortimer on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Will Adam look to Charlie for 'comfort' when he's not getting on with Ian.... (Jane Dawes on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

I was sad to hear the scene between Ian and Adam. Ian is one of my favourite characters I hate the idea that Adam is going to break his heart especially with the odious Charlie. Also Ian is a solid Rob hater who can be relied upon to stand in the way of his evil plans. Please be nice to Ian SWs! (Andrea Meling on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

No sign of double standards for Susan, however, who is “snobby” through and through – and a bit of a “creep” when it comes to supporting Charlie.

Ahh so Sooozan is Charlie's fan. No surprise there then. The woman has no taste. #thearchers (@Firehorse_on_SL on Twitter)

Susan, you will be the perfect poster girl for BL. Your face will be all over the shop and it might just be a money-spinner when slithery Charlie has had a word with Justin. You might even get a 'proper' job for Ed. Oh Susan, off you go, up the ladder. (Marguerite Turpin on BBC The Archers Facebook page)

Dreadful , snobby woman !She's probably got Charlie lined up to be Emma's next fella ! (Gillian North on Archers Addicts Facebook group)

Oh you creep Susan! #theArchers (@MrsPanad on Twitter)

I'm for an affair between Susan and Charlie! Who's in??? @BBCTheArchers #thearchers (@mznormann on Twitter)

Just a thought, Soooosan goes to Loxfest..."bumps" into Charlie..."trips" over a guy rope… (Ian Pickvance on Archers Addicts Facebook group)
