In this series of posts, we've drawn together a thorough (but not exhaustive) list of broadcasting highlights from across the BBC. We'll be doing this every week, around 3-5pm on Fridays.
It’s a big - if late - day for football tomorrow (Saturday) and we have all the action from England’s opening World Cup Game against Italy (10.20pm on BBC One, and 11.00pm on Radio 5 Live) at the Arena Amazonia in Manaus.
World Cup Music
Throughout the World Cup, 6 Music will be celebrating the music and culture of South America:
Gilles Peterson (3.00pm, Saturday) takes a musical journey from Brazilian samba to Venezuelan merengue via tango, bossa nova and bachata.
Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone (8.00pm, Sunday) looks at the Brazilian counter-culture movement, Tropicália.
Cerys on 6 (10.00am, Sunday) is joined by Brazilian music aficionado, Jody Gillett.
Just Like Hearing Brazil With Gilles Peterson (1.00pm, Sunday) looks at the country’s two passions of music and football.
On Radio 2, Gilles Peterson’s Musica Brasileira (10.00pm, Tuesday) takes us on a tour of Brazilian music history from the birth of the samba to punk rockers in Sao Paulo, including music from the favelas as well as big artists.
World War One
To mark the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, historian Heather Jones tackles the familiar image of a war centred on a static front line in Northern Europe in The Weekend Documentary: World War One (9.00am, Saturday, World Service).
World War One At Home is at the River Mersey Festival in Liverpool this weekend, and we have a range of BBC iPlayer exclusives with a series of short films WW1 Uncut (Thursday) including Combat In The Skies, Origins Rap Battle, and Myths And Confusion.
We have Blood, Smack And Tears: Afghanistan’s Heroin Hell (9.00pm, Wednesday, BBC Three) which explores the country’s heroin addiction and follows two young addicts - Jawad and Babrak - as they try to kick their habits and get their lives back together in a country ravaged by war, poverty and hard drugs.

Tune into Radio 4’s Dangerous Visions, a series of new dramas exploring contemporary takes on future dystopias including Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles (2.30pm, Saturday) starring Derek Jacobi and Hayley Atwell, and Tao Lin's curious tale about a prisoner in 2042 who depicts a society addicted to sleep in A Message Of Unknown Purpose (12.30am, Sunday).
You can also hear works by new writers in Radio 4’s Writing Lives which begins this week with Treats (7.45pm, Sunday), about a 21-year-old woman who leaves her childhood home in Manchester for a new job in Southampton in the early Eighties…
Don’t miss Friday Night Is Music Night (8.00pm, tonight, Radio 2) which is dedicated to Tony Blackburn who celebrates 50 years on the airwaves, and on Thursday the broadcaster speaks to Performer In The Portrait (10.00pm, Thursday, Radio 2) as his portrait is painted… Fostering And Me with Lorraine Pascale (9.00pm, Thursday, BBC Two) follows the TV chef as she traces her own personal story in foster care…
Art .. on the Radio
Radio 2 celebrates art and painting with a week of special programming:
- Colour On The Radio; - Vanessa Feltz (5.00am, Monday, Radio 2) takes a different word from the world of Art each day this week - Chris Evans (6.30am, Monday) explores the history of making colour from pig bladders to oil tubes, and - Jeremy Vine (12.00pm, Wednesday) visits the National Gallery and finds out how blind people can experience art.

The Girl Who Talked To Dolphins (9.00pm, Tuesday, BBC Four) tells the story of an extraordinary science experiment to teach a dolphin to speak English.
Between The Ears: Dear Mr Eliot: When Groucho Met Tom (9.30pm, Saturday, Radio 3) is a musical fantasy by Jakko M Jakszyk, woven around the real-life 1964 dinner party encounter between TS Eliot and Groucho Marx.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, there’s another chance to hear former Black Panther and music legend Nile Rodgers’ assessment of the struggle for African-American civil rights in the 1960s and beyond in Walking With The Wind: America’s Civil Rights Struggle (10.00pm, Wednesday, Radio 2).
Holocaust survivor Eva Schloss shares her extraordinary life story with Michael Berkeley in Radio 3’s Private Passions (12.00pm, Sunday).

As part of Radio 2’s Guitar Season the flamenco guitarist Paco Pena – The Spirit of Flamenco (10.00pm, Monday) goes on a personal journey to explore how the religion and music of southern Spain have come together to create one of the most infectious sounds of world music.

Mary Ann Kennedy presents World on 3 (11.00pm, tonight, Radio 3) with music from Uganda, and from the Caribbean islands of St Kitts and Nevis.
To mark the 150th anniversary of Richard Strauss, Tom Service presents a special edition of Music Matters: Strauss 150 (12.15pm, Saturday, Radio 3) as he travels to the composer’s former home.
On Tuesday Live In Concert: Aldeburgh Festival (7.30pm, Tuesday) includes performances by Christian Blackshaw.
Opera On 3 (7.30pm, Monday, Radio 3) has a rare opportunity to hear Arnold Schoenberg's masterpiece ‘Moses und Aron’ from the Welsh National Opera.
Chrissie Hynde (4.00pm, Sunday, 6 Music) stands in for Iggy Pop and spins two hours of her favourite tunes.

In the World Cup 2014 tonight Mexico play Cameroon (5.00pm, Radio 5 Live) and Gary Lineker introduces Group B’s opening match as current World Cup holders Spain play the Netherlands(7.30pm, BBC One).
Tomorrow we have all the action from England’s opening game England v Italy (10.20pm on BBC One, and 11.00pm on Radio 5 Live) in Manaus, and it’s Colombia against Greece ( Saturday, 5.00pm on Radio 5 Live, and 4.30pm on BBC One) in their first World Cup appearance for 16 years.
