Commissioners agree to LED street lighting scheme

A local authority in the east of the Isle of Man has agreed to replace all of its street lighting with LEDs over the next five years.

At its public meeting this week, Garff Commissioners voted in favour of introducing a street light replacement scheme.

Commissioner Jamie Smith said the move would ensure the local authority was "being proactive rather than reactive".

He said that about five or six lights break a year costing about £800 to fix them annually.

The move was important for safety and sustainability, he said, adding that the new lights were "more pleasant."

He said the programme would have a "very small impact" on ratepayers, however, he noted that all of the street lights would need replacing over the next ten years.

Mr Smith also noted that LEDs needed to be replaced less frequently and used less power which would mean the local authority's electricity bill would be lower.
