A community centre has been temporarily closed as a precaution while a health and safety review is carried out.

Towcester Town Council is the trustee for the Community Centre Trust, external and said the decision had been taken at a meeting on Monday.

The building was used by a range of community groups, organisations and hirers for meetings, activities, and events.

In a statement it said: "The wellbeing of staff, visitors, contractors and members of the public remains the council's priority."

Further assessments will now be carried out to identify any steps that may need to be taken before the building can safely reopen.

The town council said "a number of regular users have been relocated to the town hall and the Sawpit Centre to enable activities and services to continue where suitable accommodation has been available."

In a post on Facebook, John Godwin, a town councillor said "The building is at least 25 years past its design life and it's showing.

"The town council has no plans to close it permanently at this time."

Towcester Town Council added: "We appreciate that this temporary closure may be inconvenient for users of the centre and we are grateful for the community's understanding while this review takes place."
