Universal registers potential name for UK resort

Universal has registered a trademark that could be the name of its planned UK theme park.

The US-based company filed an application with the Intellectual Property Office, external for "Universal United Kingdom Resort" on Monday.

The name follows a naming pattern seen at other global locations, such as Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Beijing Resort.

Universal declined to comment when approached by the BBC.

The firm confirmed its intention to build a new UK destination at Kempston Hardwick, near Bedford, in April.

In its trademark application, Universal said the name was tied to amusement park services and hotels.

The trademark can also be used on various items such as books, bags, clothing, toys and much more.

Until now, it was unclear whether the name would include Bedford, England or Europe.

Some parks like Universal Beijing Resort use the city name, while others like Universal Studios Japan use the country.

In August, Universal also applied to use "Universal Studios Grand Hotel" in connection with entertainment services, hotels and restaurants.

Universal is currently waiting for approval from the government before it can proceed with its proposed theme park.

The firm expects to create 8,050 jobs when the park opens in 2031.

That figure could rise to 12,465 by 2051, factoring in roles in accommodation such as hotels.

Construction will also bring a jobs boost with a peak of 5,380 workers expected on site.
