Public Services

Employing 600 staff this department runs the Central Services, the airports, Guernsey Harbours, Guernsey Technical Services, Guernsey Water and States Works.

Public Services are responsible for managing the work across all 300 miles of the Islands' roads, the management and operation of the landfill sites, the liquid waste system as well as the sewer network.

They also act as the Receiver of Wreck and are responsible for the ongoing maintenance of Alderney breakwater.

The Public Services department is to advise the States on matters relating to:

  • Guernsey and Alderney airports
  • St Peter Port and St Sampson's harbours
  • Roads infrastructure
  • Drainage infrastructure
  • Public water supply

It also looks after:-

  • Liaison with the Guernsey branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the coordination of search and rescue functions
  • Management of a Pilotage Board
  • Maintenance of Alderney breakwater
  • Provision, maintenance, operation and development of effective radiological and environmental monitoring
  • Operation and maintenance of property under the control of the Civil Defence organisation
  • Management of environmental emergencies, control of essential commodities and receivership of wrecks
  • Management, structure and wearing surfaces of the road network
  • Maintenance of the green lanes
  • Management, collection and disposal of surface waters that fall on and/or pass under the road network
  • Management, collection, treatment and disposal of waste water from household, industrial and commercial properties
  • Administration of the States Works department
  • Foulon cemetery and crematorium, public conveniences, States markets
    and Herm.
