Jess Dandy is the soloist in Shostakovich’s tribute to Russian poet Marina Tsvetaeva. Shostakovich set six of her most romantic, thoughtful and reflective poems to music for the song cycle Six Poems of Marina Tsvetaeva, which Shostakovich completed in 1973 near the end of his life.
Weinberg’s first symphony so impressed Shostakovich that the two composers became lifelong friends. This afternoon we hear Weinberg’s twelfth symphony, composed in 1976 and dedicated to the memory of Shostakovich who had died the previous year.
