What is addition?
Let’s look at an example.
First there were 3 children at the bus stop and then 1 more child came along.
How many are there now?
You could write this as an addition like this.
3 + 1 = 4
3 and 1 makes 4. So there are 4 children altogether.
You can also use a part-whole model to help you show this.

You can add the parts together in any order.
3 + 1 = 4
1 + 3 = 4
It doesn’t matter which order you add the numbers, the answer is the same.

Example
Charlie walks 3 km from home to school, then 4 km from school to Isma's house. He then walks 2 km from Isma's house back home.

1. How far does Charlie walk altogether on that journey?
✓ Charlie walks 3 km + 4 km + 2 km = 9 km altogether.

2. If Charlie walked from home to Isma's house then to school and then back home, how far does he walk?
✓ Charlie walks 2 km + 4 km + 3 km = 9 km altogether.
The order changes, but the answer stays the same.
